Neosporin as Dog ear medicine substitute for Animax/ Dermalone2007-11-25 2:13:15

I have a doggie with a bad ear infection...I only have a drop of animax..Question can Neosporin be used instead?? I checked the ingredients and neosporin has the same Neomycin that Animax and Dermalone have in them.Any answers would be appreciated.I will be ordering the animax in a few days but need a safe substitute for my doggies ear relief right away.Thanks for serious replies only...

No, he really needs the proper medication. Animax is good, but maybe you should ask your vet for MalOtic or MicaVed? A vet tech friend really recommends the MicaVed, because it gets inside better than the ointments. You could even ask about Ketoconazole...an oral antifungal. Anyhow, you want to do your best to clear it up, or it could become a chronic problem. Of course, if he/she has allergies it probably already is chronic...until you get them under control.

ETA: You can try a cleansing/drying solution, but if the ears are really bothering him/her, the only thing that will bring relief is the proper medication...and it takes a few days of being on it to make them feel a little better. Please make sure the dog isn't head shaking, otherwise a hematoma could result. Good luck.

Ear infections are not like infected wounds. Ear infections are mainly yeast or bacterial infections. Neosporin will not take care of it. Get a good clensing and drying solution from your vet or from PetSmart or somewhere to help relieve the irritaion, and then start your dog on a proper ear medication that is prescribed by a vet.
