New Rat Terrier Pup How can I teach him to fetch a ball

I purchased mini tennis balls . . . and he will chase them if I throw it right by him . . . but all he does is pounce on it and that's it. How can I train him to chase balls . . . and bring them back ?

My Rat terrier is 18 months old, how old is yours?? He is a great retriever. This is how we did it. They are very very smart and do learn quickly if you do it several times a day with training.

"Beethoven" will, sit-stay-fetch-shake-laydown-r... even dance with you. In all it took a few months to get all the tricks with him, but we spend a few hours each day doing it.

1. Just get him to sit and stay, walk away then call him. Once he gets that command, then get the ball

2. Intro the ball to him, don't throw a hundred yards, just roll a few feet, and have him come back with it. Once get is use to the ball-roll-come back, then you can go farther with the ball.

It took a few weeks to get the whole set up, but now I can throw into the water and he bounces like a deer to fetch it.

They love it when you super happy (voice) when they do good. When you scold, your voice scares them.
