Newborn st beneard puppy wont nurse
I am hand feeding this pup w/ baby formula. What can I do to get it to nurse better and it needs more strength. also would goats milk be better to feed him?
Answers:You will need to go to your vet or a pet store and get some puppy formula. You can buy it in powder form or ready-to-feed.
When hand rearing a puppy remember that you need to simulate the puppy to pee and poop. After a feeding, take a warm, damp washcloth/paper towel and gently rub the puppy's belly to help him eliminate any waste. This needs to be done after EVERY feeding. If the mother is willing to care for the pup you can put it with her after feedings for her to clean and bond.
You should also try putting the puppy on it's mother several times a day. Some puppies just take a little longer to get started nursing. With a lot of persistance and a little luck.hopefully mom can take over full time.
Good luck!
What did your vet tell you to do. If you mean human baby formula than that is one problem. Pups cant digest human baby formula. You need puppy replacer milk.
You should call your vet to get better instructions from them before you lose this pup.
First I would contact your local vet and ask them what they feel is best for you to do. Then I would go to your closest pet store and get the puppy formula (if you do not already have this). If you are doing everything the vet or vet tec has recommended and the puppy is still not feeding correctly and does not build strength it would be best to take the puppy into the vets office for help. Baby's like that don't have a lot of chances therefore things should be done as quickly as possible. Good Luck with the puppy!
i agree with Goldengal...get some dog milk replacer. Then, check to see if baby has a cleft palate. Could be he can't nurse very well because of it. If all is well, then make sure you keep in contact with your vet or you will lose this pup.
Don't use baby formula for your puppy.. Most of those are high in Iron as well other vitamins.. You need Puppy milk replacer for your puppy. Go to the vet and get the right stuff.. Goats milk will add some fat, and you could use it for a feeding here and there in a pinch, but the milk replacer would be a better idea..
Do you take time a few times a day to try and get the puppy to nurse? It would be far better if mom would do the job.
