WHy are dogs with flat noses in danger of heat stroke2007-11-25 2:55:42

is it even true?

i dont have a flat nosed dog, i just had heard about it last year.

It is true, and it is because the anatomy (how they are made) of the face makes it harder for them to pant, thus making it harder for them to cool themselves. They are also prone to having obstructed (blocked) or narrowed airways, which makes it harder for the air to reach their lungs. The warmer you are, the more oxygen you need, so it causes problems.

Their nasal structure impedes the free flow of air, and consequent panting, which is the only way dogs have of cooling off, since they can't sweat. Most airlines will not fly short nosed dogs or cats about 75 degrees F. for this very reason.

Greyhounds have extremely long noses and suffer the same problem, during Katrina the loss of power to operater A/C and draw water create problems with owners unable to cool their dogs down and resulted in a lot of deaths

Well I can answer that cause I have a pug. Dogs with shorter noses have a harder time breathing and run out of breath alot faster. Therefor if exposed to the heat for too long it can result in major injury and possible death.

I have an English Bulldog and she has a very flat nose. I think they have trouble getting air in their lung or something if my dog is outside for like 10 minutes she starts breathing really heavy and sometimes even foams at the mouth.
