We Just adopted a 10 month old Jack Russell Terrier and he is very skiddish2007-11-25 2:50:16

He has spent most of his life in the pound. To my knowledge he has not been around very many people. Is there any suggestions to help him get over his skiddishness? He is fine with new people and will timidly go up to them but has not growled or snapped at any one

Answers:

Socialization in the early months are imperative to prevent a skiddish/nervous dog. I worked at a Vet's hospital as a tech for a number of years before having my children. I would recommend you consult with a canine behavior specialist. It might take a lot of work to gradually make him more comfortable around people. You must be patient... it sounds like maybe his first 10 months weren't the best. Maybe he was abused. Dog socialization and training would be the only real solution to the problem (and making sure to gradually socialize him yourself... not too quickly though... he's still adjusting to his new home). Kudos to you for picking a pound pup. They are so in need of good homes like yours! That just warms my heart to hear of people saving these sweet animals from sad lives locked up in cages. Don't give up on the little guy. You wait and see... he will be the best dog ever for you... because he knows you saved him. Good for you and the very best of luck!

comfort, security and love.and most of all patience.
Time heals all wounds, he'll come around as soon as he knows that there is no one out to hurt him. Speak softly to him, play with him a lot, he just needs to get used to humans.
just keep introducing him to other people.and take him to the dog park...but before you actually take him inside the fence..just take him for a walk around it..see how he reacts with the other strange dogs.
let him get comfy and used to you guys . It will take time.
Take him out a lot, and when you come across something that you think will make him nervous, just act normal, like it's no big deal and keep walking. Also when he's feeling anxious, don't coddle him or baby talk to him, because that will make it seem like you're rewarding the anxiety.
Sounds like the little guy has been through alot in his short 10 months of life. Give him time to adjust to his new surroundings and have him meet people who will be gentle and patient with him. When he goes up to people that he meets, have them reward him with a treat and kind words. Eventually, he will gain confidence in himself through your kindsness, and the kindness that he has been shown by others. Best of luck with your little JRT, they are alot of fun! I have one that I adopted as well!
