Do they look yellowish-brown? They use arsenic to kill the worms, so it can affect the liver. Did they give you the pills for the dog to take after the IV treatments? Your vet might want to run some bloodtests to check for liver damage.
Sometimes I think it is better to just leave the dog untreated until it becomes too ill to live with the heartworms. The treatment is as bad as the disease. It's sad that some people don't use a product to prevent them. It's not that expensive, and it is much easier than trying to treat the disease. People can even buy a generic form of ivermetin to prevent them if they can't afford the Heartguard. It's not that expensive at all. I know breeders who treat dozens of dogs for less than a $100 a year. It is cruel to not prevent the disease.
I'd call your vet's office and ask to speak to the on-call vet ASAP, just to be safe.
I would call your vet. This could be maney things.
I'm not sure what is causing that color, but I would take her to the Vet just to make sure everything is alright.
A dog can not be treated for heartworm with out a vet perscription. I would take her back to the shelter. it is there responsibility to make sure the dog you adopt is ok.
