We have 3 cats and want to get a dog/puppy I like Beauviers Any others good with cats2007-11-25 2:50:12

Cats 1 male age 15yrs, 1 female age 3yrs, 1 male age 3yrs

A dog that is older would do much better than a younger dog. When they are older they dont want to chase things so the cats would rule the house. Try your local animal shelter and see what dog needs a home and give them a try. You might as well save there lives instead of buying a new puppy that will most likely chase the cats like a toy. any YOUNG puppy will be a little rough, but generally fine with cats. its when they get a little older that is the problem. if a young pup grows up with cats they are generally fine.

the cats, however, will not be fine with him and are likely to scratch him.

introduce them very slowly and do not just let the pup wander up to the cats to begin with. the cats will have a problem being in the same room with him at first.

keep an eye on the pup and let the cats do as they please, but do not force them to be together.

I think it`s safe to say that ALL dogs are good with the cats that they were raised with. They may grow up to hate other cats, but they`ll always respect the "sibblings" they grew up with. Your two 3 yr olds will probally try to avoid him at first, but they`ll end up playing with him before too long. As for the 15 yr old .... he`ll just keep cuffing him until he gets the message across that he just dosen`t want to be bothered by a yappy little mutt !! Go ahead and get the puppy .... you`ll love the entertainment.

I have 2 minpins and a shepherd & husky mix, that don't seem to mind cats. I would have to say, it is how they are raised around cats. My male minpin and my shepherd & husky mix have been raised around cats. They don't bother my 2 cats. I don't know whether my female minpin has ever been around any cats, but she don't bother my cats either. In most cases, it's beter to get a puppy and socialize it with you cats. The puppy will see the cats as big, especially in small breed puppies. When they get older, they are about the same size or a little bigger. I would recomend doing research on breeds of dogs and see what some of the experts say or recomend. Good Luck!!
