We have nine new puppies, almost 3 weeks old, Mum has decided not to feed them anymore, What can we2007-11-25 2:50:15

The puppies are bullmastiff and are very big, I think they are hurting her when they all try feeding together. We have tried seperating them into two groups but she gets fed up and leaves before the second group can get in. We have trimed claws so they don't scratch so much but she has even stopped eating to reduce the amount of milk she makes. What types of foods/drinks are suitable for 3 wk old puppies and how often do we feed them?

Answers:

At 3 weeks of age, momma is not wanting to feed them b/c they have extremely sharp teeth and she is hurting from them continuosly "biting" her when they are feeding. As for the feeding, you could used some puppy formula, but at that age, it is perfectly fine to just take plain food and soak it in hot water for about an hour or 2 and then, when it is good and soft you can give it to them. After they get to about 5-6 weeks of age, decrease the soaking time for the food so they will be used to eating solid food by the time they are 8 weeks old. You should be feeding them at least every 4 hours, but every 2 would be better. When they get to about 5-6 weeks, you can go about every 4-6 hours apart for feedings. Hope you find this helpful.

You should contact a vet for this sort of information I think. I'm not an expert, but even if the mom is trying to wean them, it seems a bit young... to me. But then again, I'm no expert. Hah!
