We just discovered our dog has heartworms2007-11-25 2:50:16

She is going thru a really hard time recoupering with the treatment program which consisted of two consecutive shots last week, pain meds and antibiotic. Abby (our dog) just seems to be hurting all the time and cannot even stoop well to go bathroom. Anyone else been thru this with their pet?

How severe were her heartworms (low, medium, high)? Many dogs react differently to treatment. When I adopted by Teef about 4 years ago, we went through this, and she was down and out for two days after each treatment (and she was HIGH positive).

Generally, vets don't give the injections two days in a row, but rather, with a month in between. The high dosage in a short period of time is probably what has made ol' Abby girl sick.

The medication is making her heart work over time to pump out/ disintegrate the dead worms (you will not see them pass), so it is very taxing on their body-- basically the equivalent of marathon running for an amount of time.

Don't sweat it... She'll be fine soon! Just make sure she doesn't get overly excited about anything!

PS, My vet gave Teef some painkillers. If you didn't get these, ask your vet!

No, luckily my dogs tested clean at the age the vet recommended testing to start preventive treatment. You test... then treat if the dog is clean.
