I believe they see another dog? Who is this dog, they cannot smell him/her, etc. My mastiff growls at his reflection sometimes. Another time, he saw himself in the sliding glass door and spent a few minutes trying to coax his reflection to go into the yard and play with him.

Because they are seeing "another" dog. Dogs can get spooked from looking at there own reflection...specially in a stainless steal water dish.

i remember when my dog first saw herself my parents have a huge mirror in there room she jump so high then she started to bark. but they see another dog in there family. they don't realize its themselves. so they have to figure out who it is what there doing in there home etc

Wouldn't you be scared if you were walking around your own house minding your own buisness and you randomly saw a stranger watching you? One fears what it doesn't understand.
