What are some basset hound scent games
I have a 3 1/2 month old basset hound and I was wondering what types of scent/tracking games I can play with him? I want to train him to use his nose in the future, btw does anybody know how strong their scenting abilities are... I know their second best behind the bloodhound... I don't know why people say basset hounds are stupid and stubborn kus mine is real smart he knows the play catch naturally, he knows to do his business outside the house but he'll still have accidents, and he can read human emotions like when i'm mad or busy hell stop bothoring me and go to sleep which is really cute... the only stubborness i see is when he doesn't respond when he's smelling somethin or when he's really confident guilt trippin' me wit' his sad puppy face... the only problems i have is that he has his hyper moment biting everybody and when he barks its amazingly loud.. i know he's teething and that he's only a pup' but will his nature be more calm when he's older?
Answers:His nature will calm considerably when he's older! He will always, though, have a mind of his own - it's part of being a basset.
You can start him off by hiding treats for him to find. You have to make it easy at first - if he can't succeed, he'll stop playing. Make the game harder as he catches on. You could also take him outside with an old leather glove. Get your scent on it by rubbing it, then have him stay, and walk away dropping the glove along your route. Then you teach him "find it".
