What are some fun but easy to maintain dog breeds for living in a city
I am planning on living in Chicago and want some tips from current dog owners.
Answers:House dogs that don't need much exercise are Shih Tzu, Chinese Crested, Pekinese, maltese - these are all low shedders and allergy free too but will need grooming. Low maintenance dogs that like exercise are terriers, dachshunds, poodles (your poodle will need to be clipped). Stay away from hounds and working dog breeds unless you want to walk them miles morning and night to keep them happy and not bored. The best larger breed for apartments and city living is a Great Dane.
A lot of dogs are easy to maintain brushing wise but exercise will differ with each breed. It will depend on how much time you have available for walks, training etc.
You might be better going to the shelter and getting a mature dog that has settled and isn't as demanding as a puppy. Shelter staff will be able to help you with a quieter dog to a more active dog depending on what you want.
Good Luck
Chinese Sharpeis are great companions. I have two and my male came from Chicago.
If you get a good line they take low maintenance. They are happy to curl up with you on the couch and watch TV or read a book. They are very loving and devoted to their owners. Two walks a day plus some inside play keeps them happy. They are easy to house break because they are very fastidious about being clean. When they are socialized they are well rounded people lovers.
