What are some suggestions to keep my dog off my couch2007-11-25 2:51:04

We have a new leather couch & a 85# dog. We do not want to use any type of shock collar or devises. What are some other suggestions?

Something my mom tried with our dog was to put the shiny ads from the newspaper on the couch when you're not home.. apparently they don't like the shiny paper and won't jump up on it. Otherwise, when you're home, you just have to be firm and consistent... Saying no and taking them off the couch every single time... but I'm sure you know that part already :op I know keeping dogs off the couch is really hard, especially after they've gotten in the habit.

Another though... maybe if you make sure you come down to the floor to pet them or stand up and get away from the couch before giving some love, they'll be less inclined to want to climb up and spend some quality time with you.

Every time the dog gets up on the couch, push it off and tell it "no." If you see it getting ready to jump up tell it "no" before it even launches. And be consistent-- nobody can let it get up there.

Buy him his own couch to chew on or let him chew on something else

Put something on the couch that he/she doesn't like. My dog doesn't like cookie sheets. Or put something on the couch like books so he can't really get on the couch.

First of all, nip this in the *** right away. You are the alpha male, so when you dog jumps on your couch, or sits on your foot, walks in front of you, etc., he/she is showing that he has ownership and dominance over you. You are the one who has to set boundaries for your dog so he knows his place, which is below you in the pack.
