I dont know about maltese maybe you have to get them groomed because their hair grow but chihuahuas are very fragile they get hurt really easy thats the only problem with mine.

Please be more specific- do you mean owning one of each? Having a mixed dog of both breeds? More info please- your ? isn't very clear.
I have a maltese and I adore her! The pros are their size, and temperment. They are loving, happy little dogs who tend to take to strangers just fine. They like to cuddle and the ancient Egyptions called them "The Comforters". I imagine because they like to sit on your lap and be pet.

The cons are grooming! They will need a lot of brushing/combing especially if you want to keep their coat long. Their hair is very soft and very fine, so it tangles easily.

However, they don't shed, another Plus for the Maltese.

They are one of my all time favorite breeds.

Chihuahua don't need grooming, but are less social. They tend to pick one person and that is that. They can be very snippy and nervous. As well as protective and even agressive. Of course these are breed tendencies, not true facts about EACH individual dog.

If you have small children, I would recomend the Maltese over the chihuahua. If not, you would be OK with either.

A lot of how a dog turns out depends on the owners. Socialize them early and often.
