What are the pros and cons of getting your dogs fixed2007-11-25 2:50:33

I have a 7 month old chihuahua named Roxy and my parents are always telling me that I NEED to get her fixed! I am worried to get her fixed because since she is so small, Im scared that something will go wrong!! She is never out of my sight so Im not worried about her getting pregnant but i have heard that they go crazy when they are in heat! I need answers!!!!!!!!...

I understand your reluctance, but the pros outway the cons! Not only are you preventing and uterine infections and cancer in your pooch, but you won't have to deal with bleeding and heats :)

She'll be fine, please get her spayed. There really are no cons to spaying her. Pros are that her health will be better, she won't go into heat anymore/get pregnant, etc.

Stop worrying about your dog and get her fixed. Spaying and neutering before sexual maturity cuts the incidence of mammary and testicular cancers as they age by about 99%. It will also prevent 100% of unwanted pregnancies, pyometra (dangerous uterine infection) and many other disorders.

I should add that the only cons of spaying and neutering occur when the surgery is done cheaply at a discount clinic (if you really can't afford anything better, you should STILL have it done). These clinics must cut corners to cut costs, including using the same instruments for more than one patient, using spools of suture instead of individually wrapped and sterilized suture, removing only the ovaries and not the entire uterus, and using low-quality anesthetics. If you can afford a few extra bucks to have it done properly with your regular vet, PLEASE do so.

get her fixed!! don't worry this is a common operation the vet knows what they are doing... if someone tells you it changes the personality thats a urban legend... fixing her will cut off a lot of health risks and you can be calm and not worry about heat
