This is a hard one because it really depends on each individual person. I am a stay at home mom with 4 kids so for me the pros are:

Pet for kids

companion for me

protector of house and gaurdian of kids (I put him in the front yard with the munchkins and no one DARES to even come up to our gate)

Affectionate, sweet loyal

CONS:

Do not always have the time to take him out for walks and to the park as much as I should (kids keep me busy)

When he and the kids get riled up it is worse than a hurricane and you better watch out for life and limb

The tail is a lethal weapon

It is at times like having 5 children

I hate to clean up the dog poop in the backyard

but depending on your lifestyle your pros and cons could be completely different. Do you have the space for a dog? Do you have the time for a dog or do you work 12 hours a day? Have you looked in to the size/ type of dog you want? each breed is different and carries its own pros and cons EX: poodle pro: hypo allergenic Husky con: big shedder. See?.

Pros: you always have a companion, they are very loyal and protective, fun to play with, keep you company when no one else is around, unconditional love.

Cons: Cleaning poop, walking them when you don't feel like it, barking, shedding

Remember the expensive vet bills too!!! The bigger the dog the more $$$ you will spend on everything.

Some major cons include the long time it takes to train a dog, especially to potty train and stop chewing. It takes away from a lot of your freedom. Expect that for the first few months, there will be nothing more to your life than working and training your dog. In the beginning, you can't take your dog with you, and you can't leave it out during the day while you are gone. So you have to leave it in a crate or locked safely in the yard while you work. So you need to spend as much time with the dog as possible when you come home, and this will eat up all your free time until the dog is old enough to go out and get exercise in normal doggie ways.
