What are your thoughts/experiences on microchipping your dog2007-11-25 2:51:06

Our new Lab pup is microchipped (through homeagain.com), it was included as part of the adoption procedure when we got her from the shelter.

While I've had several dogs over the years, some that have been tattooed, this is the first that has been chipped.

What are your thoughts? We have not actually registered her with homeagain.com as of yet.

Thanks!

Microchips are an excellent aid in dog/cat recovery. Register the chip right away. Until you do, if your dog is found by someone, the only contact information available is the clinic, shelter, or breeder who implanted it. This will cause a delay in you getting your dog back.

Keep in mind that a microchip is just identification. It does not have GPS to locate your dog (some people really believe this). Also, it will not help if someone decides they want to keep your dog. This happened to me, and a lady kept my dog for a month.

Also, if your dog is lost, do not depend on the chip to get him home. Check shelters every 3 days, post fliers, put ads in the paper and ask around at local vets.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your new dog!

Some people think microchipping is mean, but not me. When u microchip a dog u are ensuring it gets back to you safely if lost. My dog was microchipped and I didn't hav a prob with it.
I was watching the news and a guy lost his dog and the dog was all the way in texas while the guy was in kanas and the dog had the microchicp and the guy got him back. so I think the micochip is great!
I think it a good thing but how much is it going to cost you and do you really need it. If you are going to hunt with your dog I said yes it is but if not why spend the money.
register her! my puppy ran away, and was gone for the longest 26 hours of my life! as soon as he came back, we neutered and microchipped his butt! it didn't hurt him, and he doesn't even know it's there. of course, we haven't had to use it yet, thank god, but i like knowing that it's there. very simple procedure, and we had it done while he was being neutered. $30 is cheap compared to how i felt while he was gone...
I live in Los Angeles. Both of my dogs are adopted or rescued dogs. Both were found stray on the street. Ginger (the one in the picture) we picked up from the middle of a busy street. We advertised online for her, and I took her to two seperate vets to have her scanned for a chip to return her to the proper owner. No chip - no ID, never found the owner.
