What breed of dog is good for a small household, no children and 2 cats2007-11-25 2:51:11

My husband wants a yorkshire terrier, but what do you suggest?

Answers:

It depends on what activity level you are looking for. I would say a shitzu, or even a mixed breed. You may want to avoid terriers since they do have a tendency to terrorize cats unless the were raised with them.

Yorkies can be nice pets, so can westies, scotties, and even dashounds, but what you have to remember that your cats might not take to it right away, best piece of advice, get a puppy that way it is used to being around cats, and will adjust over time if you get more cats.

Yorkie might not be good with cats. At least the two I have because they are so frisky.

I have a shih tzu, and I love her to pieces. All of our chidren are grown so its just the 2 of us and she is a wonderful companion to us, and cute as a button. She does not shed hardly at all and such a sweet personality. Yorkies are great little dogs also. I'd say shih tzu or yorkie.

A terrier would probably be the worst choice you can make. Terriers were breed to hunt small animals: mice, moles, etc. Your cats will soon become prey to a terrier. They would be constantly fighting. Research breeds and get something that wasn't designed to hunt and kill. Also remember to introduce them all slowly. They'll probably need separate rooms for a while with only closely supervised interaction allowed until everyone knows how to interact properly.
