What breed of dog should I get
Me and my family are looking for a small toy dog. We plan on going to a shelter to rescue one. If you have any suggestions on breeds, tips, or any other information it would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Pictures and websites are also welcomed!!!
Answers:It depends on your family situation. Good for you btw getting a shelter pup!!! :)
Most at the shelter are mix breed. IF you have little ones in the home, (kids that is) then terrier & herding breeds such as cattle dogs, fox & rat terriers...etc. can sometimes be nippy. They also tend to require alot of exercise, even for their small breed.
Very small dogs such as Chihuahua's, Poms & Toy (not miniture or standard) Poodles can sometimes be too fraile to deal with kids.
Beagles are always a great choice with kids, they are moderate energy level, and good natured. Shelties (shetland sheepdogs) can also make a wonderful choice, they can sometimes be nippy but not nearly as bad as many herding breeds.
Corgi's are nice dogs (big dog in a smaller package) but they will tend to nip your heels (including kids) but can be trained not to.
Check out www.dogbreedinfo.com which gives a list of every breed and it's temperment, size, etc. There is also a website called Breed by Breed review

where people write in about the breed of dog they own, their likes & dislikes on the breed. Wish you all the best!
Any dog in the shelter will be great! I'm glad you've already thought of going there, you will truly be doing the right thing. All though there are standards on the temperment of purebreds and such-- the case is, largely, a dog's disposition is what you make it! I'm sure you and your family will give some lucky little dog a lot of love.
i have a chihuahua and she's great! she loves my two kids too. you can even train them to go in the litter box. mine learned very fast! its so cute. hope i was helpful..
What kind of person are you? Do you walk twenty miles pulling a truck. Or are you the kind of person who sits at home watching TV like reruns of Lassie. Usually the animal shelters have mixed breed dogs, because they usually have rescues for the purebreed dogs. I would get a dog from the shelter to just provide a loving home for it. It would be nice if people wouldn't breed dogs and then turn them into the shelters. But you are doing the right thing
jack russell they are so good! and smart! and cute!
I have owned toy dogs before. There are good things and bad thing to consider. The good thing is they are usually affectionate, love to play, sit on you lap. A bad thing that you might want to consider is that toy dogs suffer from something called Small Dog Syndrome which basically means that they are a one person dog. Even if you train them at an early age they will still suffer from this. I recommend www.pets4you.com It gives you a list of all the breeds out there. Also, if you are considering a shelter dog I would recommend visiting the shelter prior to adopting the dog. I worked at a kennel for 5 years and have a lot of knowledge on dogs and cats.
