What can I do to get my dog more obiedent2007-11-25 2:50:42

He is a 4 year old sheltie. Whenever I call him outside he doesn't really come to me very much. Sometimes he just goes and sits in the shade. The only time he comes is if I have some food for him. He just chooses not to listen to me, I feel like i tried it all. Heres what I just did outside. I was sitting under a tree petting him, and i said "Good boy" and stuff while he was lieing down then i got up and so did he, i was walking back to the house but he went to the other trees and i called him in a good voice tone and he just looked at me but he didn't come. He always seems to do that, he just looks but doesn't come to me. I don't really like punishing him but is that what I will have to do? Obidience classes maybe? I have a electric fence made for him so he doesn't chase cars, and i heard that if I got a shock colar that i just had to push the button when hes bad would help. Does anyone have any ideas? Wether its for me or for him.

you answered your own question! somewhere along the line you scolded this dog UNFAIRLY for not coming to you ( i say unfair because he was never taught the "come" command) and then you scolded him... shelties are notoriously known to be handler sensitive. this dog needs nothing but POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT... go to obedience school so you may learn the proper way to train your dog and to earn his trust.

Id take some classes that only work on positive reinforcement, none of the punishment rubbish, you want him to come to you because he wants to please you and obey not because he scared stiff of what will happen if he doesn't. You are not alone I recently took on a young cross breed which has a similar way about it, we're going to class every week and I think we are making some improvements, still a long way to go though but our teacher is very patient and answers all of my questions even when we are not in class she is always available for a bit of advice!!
