What can I use for my dogs ear infection
So I got a new dog from a shelter and he was ok for the first week because they cleaned his ears right before giving him to me, but now his ears are infected again, so he's always scratching and shaking his head. I have ear cleaner at home because my other dogs would get ear infections, but I'm going to be at school for another 2 weeks. I plan to use the stuff I have at home once I get there, but is there anything that I can use while I'm here... not to cure it, but just to make him feel a little better until we get home and can cure it? Could I use hydrogen peroxide or would it hurt him? I know it would be best to take him to the vet, but the vet is at home too... and I can't get there until I go home in 2 weeks. Thanks!
Answers:The short answer is that you need to take him to the vet; there has to be one where you are.
The longer answer is that the scratching and shaking could be caused by a variety of different things (yeast, ear mites, allergies, etc) and each is treated differently.
If the ear is actually infected, cleaning it is not going to clear up the infection. You'd need antibiotics.
If you wait 2 weeks, the infection is going to get worse and more painful for the dog. If he keeps shaking his head, he could end up with a hematoma (think an Ultimate Fighter's ears), which would require surgery to repair.
For the dog's sake (and for the sake of your wallet), you need to go to a vet now.
