What can i do to help my 8yr old springer to stop chewing his wrists2007-11-25 2:50:43

I know his chewing is caused by an inhalant allergy. This happens every spring/fall. But he chews his wrists until there is no hair and this is the only spot he chews.

Answers:

it could also be from a fungal infection that dogs get around their feet.

you can get medication (a liquid wash) from your vet to treat this.

if that doesnt work, go to your vet and they will prescribe something like prednisone to stop the itch..

.

take him to the vet and get him some meds...
Have your vet prescribe prednisone for the itchiness or you can give benydryl.

Good luck

but some thing on his wrist so he cant bit them

i have a dog next door that does that to his legs

I had a dalmatian that did that too...We changed his diet (he was allergic to meat, believe or not). Diet change helped a bit. Also...lack of entertainment causes obsession and to be less bored they chew and lick themselves to the bones. That is the difficult part: how to entertain your dog, since there is only so much time we can spend on walks...Good luck!
My pommie chews on her feet like that. They have several things on the market to help in the itching. The one I used was made by Hartz. Any local pet shop will carry several brands, and it won't them if they lick or chew at it.
Take him to a derm vet. They can do allergy testing to determine exactly what allergen is affecting him. Prednisolone works well also but can cause increased urination. So he may stop chewing but may start peeing in your house. The Derm doc can give special allergen injections to control the specific issue causing the itching. Its expensive though. Also Oatmeal shampoo, and/or a recommendation to a good hypo-allergenic food. (pardon all the typos! )
I work at an animal hospital and the vet I work for has a shepard mix dog that has this same problem. She uses an elizibethan collar,( the cone shaped collars ) it prevents the dog from reaching its legs to chew them and he will still be able to eat and drink with it on.. but you can still take it off to give your dog a break when you are able to supervise him. You should be able to buy one from your vet office and you should bring your dog with you so you can get the proper size. If he hasn't chewed his legs raw then you can also get a spray on taste deterrant . I only know of a product called Bitter Apple, It may be available at pet stores but should definately be available through your vet.
