Dogs aren't like children, can't turn on the radio, or DVD, or give them food.

Dogs need to be trained to drive in cars.

Start with short rides.

Bring water, and food always, incase you break down.

Bring toys to play outside with.

make every ride, even one around the corner fun when you get there, if only for a few minates.

Teach the dog a car ride means fun at the end.

All you do is drive for half an hour, stop, let your dog out for awhile, then recountinue. I do this with my dog all the time
Try a stick. A couple of quick hits with it and he should get the hint.
slip some valium into a spoon of peanut butter... that'll shut it up. Although, the dog might piss all over your seats if it gets TOO relaxed...
feed the dog before you leave then he will sleep in the car for you. also take him some toys and stick them in the car for him.
I have been taking my puppy on road trips since he was 9 weeks old, and at first he would whine and cry but I ignored him and eventually he got quite. When he settle down I gave him an edible nylabone, and generally he goes to sleep after that . . . . .I just make sure I watch him and make sure that I stop shortly after he wakes up. Now all I have to do is open the door and he hops in the truck on his own.
We take our two small dogs with us regularly on long RV trips. The suggestion to exercise the dog before leaving is very good. Also, a potty break before you leave home is a must. What I've found very successful is I give my dog a special treat - a Merrick "Flossie" - it's a spiral chewy bone when we travel. They love them - but any special chewy treat would be OK. Keeps them busy while on the road. Also, plan a rest stop break half way if you sense the dog needs to go potty altho you shouldn't need it for a 2 1/2 hr trip.
