What can you give a dog to settle her down because she is terrified of storms2007-11-25 2:50:50

Our dog has always been scared of storms but this fear has gotten worse and worse as she has aged. Is there anything safe we can give her to calm her during them.?She is a Lab mix.

Answers:

I would take her to the vet. I knew someone whose dog was also afraid of storms and would jump in the bed with her, but not much more than that and being anxious.

There are also dog behaviour specialists, but I don't know exactly what they are called. You could try an online search.

Also, there was a show that had a dog like that in the program "Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Milan. He did very well helping that dog, and if you can find it, I hope it helps.

You have to remember that giving affection during her anxiety will tell her that kind of behaviour will get her affection, and she'll continue the behaviour.

As for giving her a drug to calm her down, I really don't know what's out there, and would consult a vet. There are sedatives for animals, but you have to be very careful with them.

i bought some stuff from the pet store called ANXIETY. it's made for things like that. you put so much in your dog's water according to weight and age, and it calms pets down and relaxes them without harming them with dangerous things. ask your vet about it if you're unsure about what to use

You might check with your vet. We have a little pom and he shakes uncontrolably when the wind blows. He is happy though if we just sit and hold him and love him until it blows over, it does break your heart and they don't understand but they sure do understand the lovins.

I have a dog that does that too. When there is going to be a storm I take her to my room and comfort her. I then put her on my bed and sing primary songs. She seems to like them and falls asleep. When she wakes up the storm is over. Good luck with your dog.
