What color should a healthy dogs ear wax be2007-11-25 2:50:53

My dog is 3 years old. And until recently his ear wax has been fine. Now it's got a brown color to it. I had him on ear mite drops, and that cleared it up alot, but his ear wax is still brown. Any ideas on why? And how can I fix this.

If the wax is brown and smells like yeast you need a prescription antifungal/antibiotic from your vet. Dogs who have itchy ears (due to ear mites, foxtails, or allergies) tend to itch them! duh, but the soil in their toes and on their claws contains malassezia yeast, which will further infect the ear and cause the itch to worsen. Get it taken care of asap and keep water and other garbage out of your dog's ears, an infection that advances too far will destroy the eardrum, and can enter the jawbone.

Could be just dirt, natural dirt from digging and playing outside.. You shouldn't treat for mites if you haven't had him diagnosed for eatmites.. Just cause a dog's ears are dirty, doesn't mean he has mites.. A yeast infection looks an awful lot like mites, but until they look under a microscope, you can't tell 100%

if the color of the ear wax is brown its still infected. the healthy color of ear was should be yellow and have no foul smelling Oder. you need to take your dog to vet.

You really should see your vet. It could be a yeast infection or punctured ear drum.
