What do I do if my new puupy wont get along with my current dog2007-11-25 2:51:17

I really want to get this pug puppy from a breeder, but I'm worried that my 2 yr. old Boxer that I currently have won't get along with the pug puppy, or the pug puppy won't get along with my Boxer! My boxer is VERY friendly, and is not agressive at all- he LOVES other dogs and people. But there's always a chance the pug puppy won't like my dog, right? Is there a way to teach the puppy to like him- or is it unfixable? What do I do if there is no possible way to get them to liek eachother? I don't want to just dump the pug into the humane society or foster home- they have enough pets to take care of as it is!

Is there anything I can do if they , somehow, do not get along?

Answers:

just give them some time, and if they fight then spray them with water and say "NO, bad dog" and hopefully they will get along. chances are they will, but if they end up not getting along DONT put either of them down. if you really feel the need one needs to go, get rid of the puppy and give it to a friend. dont let your current dog down and get rid of it for the puppy.

DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT--GIVE THEM TIME AND THEY WILL BE FINE--YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THOUGH THAT ANYTIME YOU INTRODUCE A NEW DOG TO THE ONE YOU ALREADY HAVE, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THAT PERIOD OF TIME WHERE ONE IS TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEIR "ALPHA" ROLE--I HAVE 3 DOGS MY 2 1/2 YR OLD I HAD FROM THE TIME HE WAS BORN PRACTICALLY--HE'S A BIG DOG TOO--THEN I GOT THE 2ND ONE-A 3 YR OLD BEAGLE--HE'S THE ALPHA DOG--THEN JUST LAST YEAR--I GOT THE 1 YR OLD (NOW HE'S TRYING TO BE THE "ALPHA") LITTLE DO THEY ALL KNOW--THAT I AM ACTUALLY THE ONLY "ALPHA" IN THIS HOUSE--LOL--I DID LOOK ON A WEB SITE FOR DOG DOMINANCE/BEHAVIOR ISSUES AND READ THAT WHEN DOGS ARE TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEIR ALPHA ROLE--THE HUMAN SHOULD NOT INTERFERE (UNLESS THERE IS BLOOD FLYING OR THE POSSIBILITY THAT ONE OF THE DOGS IS GOING TO KILL OR SERIOUSLY HARM THE OTHER) THIS IS VERY HARD TO DO, OF COURSE, BUT IF YOU DON'T STAY OF IT, THEY WILL NEVER ESTABLISH THIS VERY IMPORTANT ROLE AND CONTINUE TO HAVE FIGHTS AND IT JUST GETS WORSE--IT ALSO ADVISED THAT THE DOG THAT EVENTUALLY WINS THE ALPHA ROLE MAY NOT BE THE DOG THAT YOU WANT TO BE THE ALPHA BUT THAT IS TOO BAD-TRY TO RESPECT THE ONE THAT EVENTUALLY WINS THIS PLACE (ALL THIS INFORMATION GOES BACK TO THE WAY DOGS NATURALLY ACT WHEN THEY ARE IN A PACK AND IT WAS QUITE HELPFUL TO ME). GOOD LUCK
Please check out the breeder. Is this a puppy mill? Why do you want another dog??? For you ...or as company for the boxer? Is the boxer spayed/neutered? How is she/he with other dogs. Think this through. Your first responsibility is to your first dog, the boxer. If he/she likes other dogs, ask the breeder (do not buy from a puppy mill) if you can have the pug and boxer meet. This sounds like an emotional need for you and not in the best interest of your boxer. If so, consider volunteering to walk dogs at your local humane society.
Do not listen to pojo! How would you feel if you were forced to live with your worst enemy and punished for arguing and fighting? Dogs that don't get along and show agression to one another will learn to be civil but will be perpetually stressed. Allowing a puppy to grow up in such an environment can cause behavioral issues with people and other dogs.
