What do I do with my Lab and Shephard

My Lab is temporarily tied up right now 'cause i just got a new shepherd. The shepherd is about a month and a half. im afraid the lab is going to be too rough on the new dog. im new to these stuff so please give me suggestions.

first of all, i think it's a bit unfair for your lab, somehow knowing that he got tied up (and left alone?) when the new puppy came. it's like he's being punished for something he did not do. he might not know how to behave, and he might react unpredictably.

you should introduce them at a neutral place (preferably at the park or somewhere that isn't the lab's "territory") to lessen the chance that he would be a bit aggressive or anything. let them sniff each other and become acquainted. be alert towards any seemingly aggressive behavior you lab might show. it's your job to keep the puppy out of harm's way.

when the first meeting is going well, praise and let them play together. you have to be there to ensure puppy's safety. monitor them closely, specially for the first few days. supervise the play time they have together, until both your dogs can be trusted.

even though it can be tempting to intervene when your new puppy is being "bullied", try not to scold your lab for growling. he'll do that to show the puppy that he's boss. treat them both equally, and be fair. usually, the older dog will be top dog, but if the newcomer is more dominant, or if the lab is submissive, it can be the other way around. once top dog has been established, reinforce what they decide. feed and greet top dog first, and so on.
