What do I need before I get a dog2007-11-25 2:51:19

I am going to be getting a full grown dog from an animal shelter.

I am just wondering is this all I have to buy before hand?

-Lead/Collar

-Food/Water bowls

-Kennel

-Blankets/Bedding

And does anyone have an idea of the rough cost of buying all of the above items?

All what you listed would be good to have on hand. Hopefully the dog is house trained. When I got my dog I went and bought everything I thought I would need, but it all changed after I got him home. I would get some chew bones, small bag of food, milk bones, and a leash/collar, and brush to start with. A kennel may be needed while you are away until the dog gets used to living with you. I used a kennel only when I was house breaking mine, then it turned into his "safe place". This all shouldn't cost more than $45 (US), add an additional $40 (US) for the kennel.

After you have him home and you get to know him you'll have a better idea what he likes as far as food is concerned, if he likes to sleep on the bare floor rather than bedding, etc... If you can, spend the first few days at home with him so you can get to know one another. This will help him feel more at ease in his new home. Good Luck!

Go to the pet isle and get some toys for it too! My dog loves to play with balls stuffed animals and things that squeak. Also get some treats. Use the treats when the dog does something good. Like scratch on the door when it wants to go to the bathroom or sits or stays.

The cost will totally depend on which brand you choose. The prices range a lot on each item! Look at websites online like Petco or Pet Smart, and they should give you some prices on what they have.
