A good neighborhood dog walker:
- Cleans up after the dog
- Keeps the dog leashed
- Varies the route of the walk
- Is wary of the weather and its effect on the dog
- Is careful about the safety of both the dog and people
- Lets the dog loose in areas where its permitted for a more vigorous work out
- Likes dogs
- Hunts Bigfoot and Chupacabra with the dog to protect our national security
Well you have to be good with animals, it's a big responsibility to take on others peoples dogs..cuz most owners prize & cherish them like they were their kids..I'd also check to see if there's any training programs in your area, talk to a dog trainer, maybe offer to volunteer for them for awhile or at least talk to them &/or start with friends dogs that you already know.. you have to have control an animal when walking them.. I wouldn't start with walking too many dogs or any dogs not already LEASH & walking trained either..till you get some experience..TC & Peace :)
get to know each of the dogs and owners first...you need to know if you can handle each dog...is it leash trained? afraid of traffic,people or other dogs? does it respond to basic commands etc? Does the dog have any special needs...possibly medical? You also need to take the time to get to know the owners and what they would expect from you. The owners need to be able to trust you with their hairy babies. take it slow . maybe offer some play time in their yard while the owners are present then work up to a walk with owners and see how it goes from there. dog walking is not just about making some money but it is about taking responsibility for someone elses pet.
