What do you do about a dog who pouts for hours if you leave the house for a few hours without him
My dog, a chow/shepherd mix, punishes me by ignoring me and pouting when I leave the house for a few hours without him. He doesn't come to the door to welcome me when I come home, and lies and sulks somewhere. He won't make eye contact. He does this for hours. He is normally a wonderful dog but by nature has always been somewhat aloof. I never get angry with him but lately this "spoiled brat" routine of his is getting to me.
Answers:Tell him to suck it up and walk it off?
If you make a fuss over him when he behaves this way, you're rewarding him for it. Ignore him. Go about your business in a normal, cheerful way.
If it's really bothering you, insist on taking him out for a walk or engaging with you somehow. Do some obedience work with him when you get home. Insist that he is active and involved with you.
send him to obedience school
tell him no pouting .or else.
Okay you have already spoiled him way too much. But i mean you will just have to leave him there. He will eventually get over it. You could always when you get back to the house take him out for a walk, he would love that.
It's o.k. for him to not welcome you home. This problem is a whole lot better then having a dog with seperation anxiety. It sounds like your dog is just wanting attention. Ignore it and he will be fine. Good Luck
Could he have some mild separation anxiety? Could you try a calming supplement? The website www.drsfosterandsmith.com has several products for anxious dogs.
Just show him some love, if he really loves you and you really love him then he will be all happy again...its sort of mean, but bribe him with some snacks or something. If that doesn't work then just ignore him back, pretty soon the both of you will be tired of it, and totally cave in. Good Luck!
Sounds like your dog may be starting to think that he is dominant over you. So you have to make sure you're the big dog and one of the ways to communicate that to your dog is by acting aloof. Don't always give him attention when he comes up to you for it, and as to him sulking, just ignore that. He may have realized that when he does that, you aproach him to give him attention which is a subordinate thing to do, therefore making him the dominant one. So by not responding to his sulking and "apologizing" to him for being gone, may help the problem.
Shepherds can naturally be aloof anyhow..
