i can tell the difference between playing and fighting, and i can't be there all the time to stop them

Always interupt the behavior and redirect with toys or some other activity. No you can't be there every second, but you can deter most of it.

Dogs play fight constantly and it can sound horrible to us, but they truly are playing.While fighting do they yelp or cry out? Has anyone one of them bit so hard they drew blood on the other pup? If not, its likely play fighting, this is a natural thing with canines, they are establishing the hierarchy of the pack.

With my puppies, their mother always breaks it up, but if that is not possible, you must be the one to break it up. If they have to be left unattended, and they fight too often, I would crate them until they can be supervised. You do not want to allow them to think that being aggressive is okay.

We let them be usually, they are displaying their dominance and getting an order. If they don't quit after about 30 seconds we stop them, but that rarely happens.
