I want to have a dog but I dont want the dog who keeps on barking when he sees a person.

I have heard basenjis are barkless but the two basenjis I met both were compulsive barkers. Breed is no guarantee. For no barking, you want a calm and confident dog-- or a cat.

Most dogs that bark a lot are bored, scared, nervous, or trying to talk to you or other dogs.

A dog that gets to meet many people as a puppy and learns people are OK, and has basic training, and is trained to be quiet around people, and gets good attention and exercise daily is the best dog to NOT bark at people.

My dog fresh from the shelter barked very loud and often because he was scared, but calmed down whenever I pulled him away and walked him to calm him down, etc. I also gave him lots of exercise.

I always responded to his barking because barking is the dog saying he wants your help to figure something out-- and then i would tell him to stop immediately.

Once I taught him to come and touch me instead of barking, he stopped barking nearly overnight and started touching me for everything new and important instead because he would be praised and I would pay attention too.

Now he only barks when very important and briefly. He is a very quiet dog and works well in public and never has to say a woof to get my attention. But first 10 days I thought he would drive me to a nervous breakdown with that big voice of his.

(He is a lab-- and labs do bark, they just are usually too outgoing and friendly to bark a lot at people.)

I have a lab-spanial cross and she is the loudest most ongoing barker ever! So watever you do don't go for that
