What do you think of Yorkies
I want a Yorkie puppy and live in an apartment with big open yards everywhere i could walk it alot and give it plenty of room to run and play. I LOVE dogs and know tons about them! Thanks for any advice you have !!!
Answers:Yorkies are yappy, bouncy and CAN be a nightmare to housetrain!!
They do well as apartment dogs except for the barking and house breaking issues.
Yorkies are now the number two registered breed in America, which does NOT mean they are the second most popular, but rather the number two bred in the nation.
This means they are terribly overbred, and because the AKC does not look in to the breedings most of the time, breeders are breeding these dogs with major faults including coloring, size, and temperament.
The Yorkie, per the AKC standard, should weigh between five and seven pounds. NOT two pounds, no teacup sizes!!
So if you really want a Yorkie, be prepared to spend the first week at home making sure he is learning where to go potty and how to hold it. Using potty pads is just asking for disaster, as most dogs do not learn that they can only go on that paper, NOT paper everywhere else or on the carpets.
Also, look for a breeder who does not allow the puppies to go home until AFTER twelve weeks! Tiny breeds such as the Yorkie mature slower as puppies, and need to stay with the mother longer for weaning and learning purposes.
A truly reputable breeder will:
*Test their dogs for ALL Yorkie health ailments including Hypothyroidism, Luxating Patella, Collapsing Trachea, and eye abnormalities, among others.
