What do you think of greyhounds2007-11-25 2:52:07

The only trait that should be emphasized, I feel, more so than others is the Greyhounds breed function. Greyhounds are, by nature, predatory animals. They were bred to be independant sight-hunters. If ever allowed off-lead, disaster can occur. If a Greyhound catches sight of a small animal (rat, squirrel, cat, small dog, etc), it's natural instinct is to chase and kill it. And when Greyhounds are in stride, they all but lose their sense of hearing and will NOT stop chasing until it catches the prey. And you will never catch a Greyhound once it runs ... they run FAR faster than any human could ever hope to. That's something that any Greyhound owner must be aware of and cautious to!

PS - the myth about Greyhounds not being able to sit is just that ... a myth. Racing Greyhounds were not allowed to sit in the starting pens (as that might delay the quick start of the race) and often hot pokers were used to "discourage" a dog from sitting ... therefore, the fear Greyhounds seem to have about sitting is generally taught to them by the human cruelty they experienced at the racetrack.

I love greyhounds, they have great temperments. I have often wished I had a house (live in an apartment) so I could foster rescued greyhounds.
I dunno. My cousins had a retired racing greyhound. It was sweet but it used to just lay around all the time.
i love greyhounds, whippets, salukis, basenjis
