What do you think of greyhounds
No one really knows why some GHs don't sit. Mine does and I have trained others to as well. My thought is that it has to do with the musculature of the legs and tightness that makes it difficult. It could also be the lack of fat they have to cushion their sit if they are on hard floors. But the hot poker is a complete myth.
I think greyhounds are great dogs. I feel sorry for them for being used in racing. I am glad there are groups that take in the retired greyhounds and find them loving homes.
I am a 3 time adopter and a greyhound foster parent.
because of their calm nature many can live and are adopted to apartment dwellers I know of several greyhound owner that live in an apartment and most have 2 to 3 greyhounds living with them, but you need to be commited to 2 15 minute walks an a 20 to 1/2 hour walk so about a total 1 to 1 1/2 hours per day which is far less exercise than a labrador requires or Jack Russel Terrier even my chinese crested requires more exercise, their exercise needs compared to most breeds are at the bottom of the scale,
In racing no greyhound can be forced to run, they race because they love to , not all are prey driven sure some will run to try to catch the lure but other run because they are competitive by nature so want to be out in the lead, about 80% can live with a small dog or cat and most rescues will test them to find out whether then can co-exist with smalls animals before adopting them out. Any owner that uses a shock collar or takes a greyhound to a dog park that shows agression is the irresponsible horrible one, not the dog, the dog with the right owner who recognizes the dogs limitations who find better suited places for her dogs to run, example muzzled at greyhound only playdates where all the dogs are muzzled and it would be a wonderful companion and pet, so it is not the dog at fault but its owner. My bridgegirl was a competitive racer who spent a couple years racing and had zero preydrive, if she was resting my ferret would curl up between her feet to sleep, even the wild rabbits were safe with her as she has no interest in chasing them. My current 2 do have preydrives but live peaceably with 2 cats and a chinese crested , I hcan take them out around other small dogs as long as I introduce them first and they learn that it is a dog and not a rabbit they can run around and play together, a small unknown dog at a distance they could potentially mistake for prey, so knowing that I need to make sure they met the dogs first before letting them run for example at a dog park.
