depends how committed you are. if you are lazy and get sick of things easily, cats for you. if you like exercising and playing around, dogs for you. if you like your house to smell like shi*t, birds for you

My suggestion is that if you don't know what you want, please don't get a pet. Pets need commitment. You see so many poor dogs and cat end up in those welfare home, animal society.... So unless you feel that you are committed, then get one. And what type of dogs to buy is also an art of skill, cause different dog have different behaviour and character.

If you want a companion, you need to be ready for responsibility.

My three dogs are wonderful companions and guardians. They take care of me when my husband is out traveling in his work, which is a lot of the time. But I must feed them and groom them and give them love and take good care of them.

If you're ready for a commitment, I consider dogs to be closer companions than cats. Cats are too independent to give you a lot of companionship.

You need to research breeds and find out which ones match your personality. My dogs include 2 Great Pyrenees, who are very independent thinkers. That's part of their job description. They are also very smart and loving. Their independent thinking makes them more challenging to train. My other dog is an Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler cross. That means he's more oriented to working WITH me as his handler, and so he's easier to train. He's also smart, but a bit nervous and needy. He's the omega dog, so he's a bit insecure because he doesn't want to be the omega dog.
