now THIS is a question i can sink my teeth into...so to speak. i have a 10-year old akita, and he really is the best dog in the whole world. LOVES people, loves kids, knows when to be gentle & when he can horseplay, is a couch potato (like me) doesn't really bark much at all (although the "talking" thing they too is too freakin' cute!)...really my best friend in the world. the downsides: the shedding is crazy, and i CANNOT let him be around any other animals (he's gotten along with a couple of dogs before, but sometimes he'll suddenly change his mind, and i just got tired of breaking up dogfights) so if you're considering getting one, they're not for the faint of heart...be sure you can be the boss of a 100+ pound dog, obedience training is a MUST, and do it when they're still puppies...you have to establish dominance right out of the gate. also SOCIALIZE them with other dogs from the time you bring them home, and you MAY be able to avoid the dogfight issue (not necessarily, though, they are naturally aggressive, especially with other dogs of the same gender...socializing will help if anything will, but don't leave them unsupervised with other animals until you're sure, and even then...who knows?) but keeping him isolated is the small price i pay for the loving, loyal, smart, and funny dog that i love.

Stunning dogs. I've never owned one, but have been around them. The male was a teddy bear, but the female was somewhat leary and stand-offish (but we were strangers).
