As with any large powerful breed, in the wrong hands, they can be dangerous.
With the right owner, they are fantastic dogs. They can tend to be aggressive with other animals and people if they are not well socialized, but can be very gentle and great with kids when they are familiar with them. The key to this breed is early socialization, and when that is done, they are wonderful, smart and loyal dogs.
We had a japanese akita for 15 years that dog was the sweetest dog we have ever had. Her parents were also very kind dogs. I think the akita is an all around good bread to have because they are very friendly.
I think they are wonderful dogs! I like how they look and I like their temperaments. But like any other breed, you have to do your research and make sure that it is the right kinda dog for you and your living conditions before you buy one.
I myself own a Shiba Inu. It looks like a small Akita, but the personality is different.
I love the breed, Akita Inu. Beautiful, intelligent, loyal dogs.
Definitely NOT for the first time pet owners, however.
And they don't respond well to forced based training.
My favorite true story on an Akita:

They are lovely contrary to popular belief.I have one and know people who also have them.Mine in particular was brought up with a Golden retriever and is great natured, too soft at times .Lets my collie cross bully him.
