What does it mean when my dog howls when I howl2007-11-25 2:52:11

This has been a question that's been on my mind for years. I have an older Beagle at home and once in a while I want to get his attention and make him howl since - well, he's a dog and that's what they do.

Now, what I do is I howl but not too loud. My dog then looks at me funny and stirs around in place a bit. He then starts moaning and everything and after about a minute, he would start to howl with me. He will do this for several times before he just quits or it turns into a bark.

My mother is under the impression that he is "singing". However, I am personally unsure what to make of it by nature. What does it mean? Does it hurt him, is it out of sympathy or obligation, is he REALLY singing, or is it some sort of calling that if primarily communicated between dogs but he is confused that a human is howling?

I don't know. I just thought I would ask. Thanks.

Dogs howl to one another to let the others know where they are, if they are lost, it helps them to find their way etc. If you howl and you are sitting in front of him, you are confusing him cause he can see you, but he must howl back to let you know where he is.. To show you the way.. It's an obligatory howl, but confused howl, cause you aren't lost..

Maybe he is excited a human can speak his language! But if you start singing and he howls...you need voice lessons.

When you howl with him, that's his natural instinct to communicate. To him, you are not human, but another dog. You are the Alpha dog.

It hurts their ears and they respond by howling-their hearing is way more sensitive than yours but your howling hits a note that they howl back at-don't do it

Hey you are his pack! If you, as the leader of the pack, howl...so does he! Hes following your lead. Its cute to think he's singing, but hes not. Wolves howl as a form of communication. Hes communicating.
