What does it mean when your dog has dry skin white flakes and irritated skin on belly2007-11-25 2:52:12

This chihuahua mix, Peanut had 7 puppies and was left outside in 28 degree weather being fed beans and rice. She lost one puppy. My new friend rescued her and keep her for 6 months. She has 3 chihuahua's and with Peanut she was breaking the law by having 4 adult dogs. I wonder what I can do to improve her clinginess. I have another dog Nina who is 7 and twice her size also a chihuahua mix. They look alike mother and daughter.

ok so I am guessing you have peanut. So she is done weaning her puppies. If she has not seen a vet please do so.

For her dry skin add a tsp of vegitable oil to her food. And I hope you are trying to get her on a dry food. as her teeth maybe bad from the beans and rice. Brushing teeth is important. They may have to be proffesionally done depending on how they are. For the irritation. try some triple anitibiotic ointment that you can get over the counter at any walmart, target, or drug store. If you find her licking it off try to cover it so it can do its job. it will not hurt her if she licks it but won't help the soar.

As for the clinginess. She has been threw a lot. so just give her some time. And introducer her to as many people as you can. She needs to learn to socialize. which is a lot of problems with puppy mill pups. Bless you and good luck.

Well when my dog had flakes it was just a bad case of dandruff.I washed my dog 2 times a month in summer and 1 time a month in winter. After that my dog got all better. If thats not the case and you have white flakes walking around on your dog, then she has a case of Cheyletiella or, Walking dandruff and should be seen by a vet.

Im glad she was rescued from that horrable situation. Um, She probably has skin conditions from being neglected and malnourished eating beans and rice. Get her on a good dog food, maybe a fish oil supplement for dogs. and most importantly, to a vet asap for a check up. I doubt she's ever had one.
