Different races of dogs were produced by selective breeding. Sometimes, two dogs too close in blood are mated, such as a brother and a sister, if the breeder is looking for a particular characteristic. When you breed animals too close in blood, there is the possibility of genetic defects. Selective breeding would, in time, reduce or eliminate these defects. A well-bred dog is one that comes from ancestors who were known to be free of defects. A poor-bred dog is one where the ancestry was not examined for defects. The dog may be OK today, but a defect may surface later, or the dog may produce descendants with defects. In theory, selective breeding will eliminate all defects, and dogs would produce defective descendants at the same low rate than wild animals. In practice, many types of dog have defects that come up even in the best of them. In this context, a well-bred dog is one that comes from ancestors who were known to be as free of defects as the race allows. A poor-bred dog is one where the ancestry was not examined for defects. GDS may mean the particular defect that a particular race shows. There are several terms.
