It would be much better to treat him correctly and more humane. There are several drugs that might help him but you will need a prescription from the vet.

It could be any number of things, how old is the dog? An aged dog could be experiencing arthritis. Is he an indoor dog? Is there a chance he could have injured or dislocated a hip? This often is the result of a mild bump from a moving car (the kind the dog will get up and run from but then feel the pain later) or by being too rough in a fight or play with another dog or person, or from jumping or falling from a high place. What size is the dog? Joint pain caused by arthritis or a depletion of cartilege in the hip joints are common in larger or some highly active smaller breeds. Injuries are more common in small dogs especially those who jump and bounce alot during play, jump on and off furnature etc.

Your dog COULD have sore muscles from exertion but unlikely if he's tender from a touch on the back, that suggests that the pain is more related, the touch on the back applies weight to the hip and leg joints causing an increase in discomfort or pain. I suspect it's in the hips simply because when a dog has a problem with it's foot or elbow joints it usually carries that leg up and walks on three legs, if two legs are injured it will often do the same thing, but it will alternate from one leg to the other to give each leg a chance to rest. But when the pain is in the hips it's actually MORE painful to hold the leg up since doing so applies all the weight of the leg to a suspended point on the hip. Think of it as trying to crawl with a fractured femer ... it's just easier to walk carefully without the hopping-jostle.
