It would be wise for you to keep this dog away from the children before someone gets hurt badly. Under no circumstance should you ever leave this dog alone with the children.
Akita's are said to be one of the hardest dogs to train because of their aloof nature. They are also very aggressive with other animals and sometimes children. They like to dominate and do not like to be starred down at. If she is being aggressive with small children, stand with her when they are around and try to sooth her. Dog training should also be considered and if not, I think that children should be kept away from her as much a possible.
Get a pro trainer that is experienced with Akitas ASAP and for now muzzle your dog in public. It sounds like a law suit and accident waiting to happen. She is a ticking time bomb since you are not keeping her under control at all times.

Also Google Nothing In Life is Free and I'd highly recommend Cesar Millan's book, DVDs and show.
Spay the dog, train the dog, keep the public safe, esp. kids. Otherwise put the dog to sleep...harsh but true. Akitas are great dogs with the right owner, but they are not good for novice dog owners as a rule. They can be very alpha if allowed.
Don't make excuses for the dog. Do get her a checkup with the vet to make sure nothing else is causing the aggression.
