What dog breed for me2007-11-25 2:52:15

Hi everyone. I am moving back to texas this summer and we are planning to adopt a dog (may be from a purebred shelter) and we are not sure which breed is the best for us. We will be living in a part of texas that is very hot and humid (houston) and we need a dog that can stand the heat (but it will live inside). The youngest kid in my family is 11, and he has already had dogs, so he is very easygoing with them and can read their body language. We want a dog that will be friendly to strangers (I was bit by a unfriendly german shepherd, but still adore dogs). I want to do competitive agility with it but it cant be a border collie (they are unoriginal, everyone does agility with them). We will have a HUGE yard with a pool (with a fence) and a very large AC house. It can shed as much as it wants. I can exercise it for about 1.5 hours a day and my mom can take it on walks in the morning and mid day. My little brother will also take it everwhere with him, so it will get loads of exercise.

The most popular agility breeds are the medium-to-large dogs that are quick on their feet -- Border Collies (of course), Pulis, Shetland Sheepdogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Australian Shepherds, etc. -- but almost any dog, including mixed breeds, can learn, enjoy, and earn agility titles.

Have you considered an Australian Cattle Dog? Wonderful breed that does fine in the TX heat (had one when I lived in Houston).

have you considered a lab I don't know about agility but they have shorter coats and love people and are usually very good with kids plus they are full of energy

Try a Sheltie, or Shetland sheep dog (miniature lassie)
