What dog breed for me
They do shed, believe it or not. Even though they are short haired, somehow they manage it. Also, they seem to sweat, so baths are necessary, at least once a week. Please avoid white boxers, no matter how beautiful they are. They usually become deaf. We have a brindle and he is absolutely gorgeous, but the fawns are just as nice looking.
Between a male and a female, I don't think you can go wrong with either. Just make sure you choose a reputable breeder or definitely take a look at Boxer Rescue in your area.
Also, you mentioned you want to start agility. I have been working with my Boxer and he is taking to it wonderfully. They can go thru a course extremely fast, so be prepared to learn some handle signals, so you don't have your tongue hanging out by the end. There is another Boxer, that comes to the course, who is learning, too, and he is doing really well.
Jack Russell or Rat Terrier
I have one of each and they are sooooooo great and easy to train and FULL of energy! :)
I am a huge Boxer fan! I have been a breeder for years. Incidentally Boxer's do not frequently get a bath nor do they need one. In fact it can dry them out and cause psoraisis... If you do Bathe them rub them down with lanolin. They will love you for it. Boxers were used as "Working dogs" during world war II and have a fabulous reputation as a family dog. Be warned they are bundles of energy and a little playful. They are the comedians of the dog world. Good luck to you!
Pembroke Corgis are awesome. I have a 5 month old Corgi myself. They love exercise and they are excellent agility dogs. They shed about 2x a year, and their coats are relatively short. They are active but are great with people and children. They never get tired of cuddling next to you :)
I guess it would depend more on what type of dog you want. I have and breed Siberian Huskies and they are the sweetest friendliest dogs. They are very cuddly contrary to popular belief, they do quite well in warm or humid climates. Of course, your dog will be inside and have a pool so I don't think it will be a problem. They are also great with children and mine are a lot like babysitters. I have two boys that will soon start training in agility and they are great jumpers as well as listeners so i'm sure they'll be great at hurdles and tunnels. Another dog I would recommend is the golden retriever. I do not or have owned any before but I love the breed and they are also known as the ultimate family dogs. Both the retrievers and the huskies have hair but not all of them have a lot. Some are long-haired and some have about as much hair as a dalmation. These are the large dogs I recommend because of personal experiance and knowledge in the breeds. It's really no wonder they are the most celebrity, movie-star breeds. They great companions and very appealing look-wise. Good luck.
A chihuahua might be a good idea. They can take the heat, they're agile and yes even some are great with kids and strangers. They and love to go everywhere with you and are small enough to do so. You can go to many rescue sites and find a chihuahua thats pretty much everything or anything you want.
