What dog breed is right for me (St Bernard, Tibetan Mastiff, Newfoundland)

I love my childhood dog, a 150 lb female St. Bernard. Everything about it is perfect for me (except the slobber). What other dogs are comparable to a St. Bernard? I like the looks of the Tibetan Mastiff and the Newfoundland. I just really like the gigantic but laid back, lovable dogs that couldn't hurt a fly. Dogs I hate: little ones, ones that bark.

I'm with you! I love big dogs and I absolutely love my Newfoundland, Henry. He's a big bear and pretty laid back now. Everyone adores him. He's very good with people.

Compared to a Saint Bernard, Newfoundlands actually drool a lot less. Come to think of it, I don't have any problems with drool with my newfie. However, he sheds A TON. Be prepared to find black hair everywhere. We sometimes vacuum twice a day. The shedding is the only downside to having him, but he more than makes up for it. (Oh and the other downside is a shorter life span... = (

Newfies are super laid back as they get older, but when they're younger (esp males) they really are rambunctious. They are very intelligent and need a firm hand or they will run the household, and a 150-lb out of control dog is a danger and a liability.

My dog wouldn't hurt a fly, but he is very protective of me and my husband. I was once home alone and someone tried to break into our home. It was terrifying but Henry scared him off. Ever since then, whenever anyone comes to the door or up to me in the yard, he will bark and run between me and the person until I tell him it's ok. It's very sweet.
