I have an English bulldog that is about 8 months old. He eats alot, and the Science Diet is breaking my bank... should I suck it up, or can I switch him to a cheaper-but-just-as-healthy dog food?

Answers:

The answer is a resounding no. You shouldn't even be feeding him Science Diet. Bulldogs are notorious for having bad food allergies and the some of the top ingredients are big no no's for food allergies. The top allergens for Bulldogs are Corn, Soy, Yeast, not to mention that the rendered animal fats in Science diet make your bulldog prone to put on weight which could potentially harm him in the long run as well as that if you don't mix the Science Diet with yogurt or beano, you are bound to have horrible gas problems too. I feed my bulldog either Merrick Turducken kibble or Wellness Super 5 Chicken Kibble.

My bulldog does not really care for wet food out of the can, but on occasion I will make him a wet style food out of 1 lb of raw ground chicken, a handfull of raw spinach, some baby carrots, a whole apple, brown rice cream, Uncle Sam's Oatmeal with Flaxseed, and I used to use water and run it through a food processor until it was the consistency of paste, but I may wind up using Yogurt in lieu of the water.

purina pro plan is one of the best moderately priced dog foods. i wouldnt suggest gravy train or any of the extremely nasty store brands. holistic is always best but isnt always affordable. i understand totally. purina one is also a pretty good food for the money. and usually runs about 18 dollars for 17-20 lbs.
Hello..any dog food that says 100% Nutrionally Complete on the bag is good dog food, as they found out with the recent recall of the bad food, most of it was all the same stuff & that made people even more mad ..LOL..but I already knew it was all pretty much the same ..in America the dog or cat food that says 100% has to be 100% complete by gov't standards, so unless your dog is on a particular food on vets advice for illness..just use 100% Nurtionally Complete, cuz many others are a SCAM to make $$$$$ Take Care :)
I feed my puppies Iams for puppies it's $9.99 per bag (in the St. Louis area). If you go to their website you can see the nutritional value and also that it is not at risk to be recalled either. My puppies love it.
www.consumerreports.org. Costs $30 per year for subscription, and it's well worth it for questions just like this one.
our 8 month old english bulldog eats regular purina. she has never had any stomach or health issues and our vet is very happy with her growth rate.
You will get lots of conflicting answers on this one for sure, but I feed my 4 Wellness. It's made from human grade food and 98% of the contents are from the US and Canada which should be something you look for.
