What dog would you recommend for a man out of college who has a full-time job2007-11-25 2:51:32

I've been wanting a dog for years, and now that I'm out of college I can finally get one. I had a family dog back when I was in the ages from 8-19 and he was able to be left alone for up to 8 hours in a day while I was in school.

If you must get a dog, rescue one who is housebroken, and a low-maintenence breed like Golden Retriever or a Greyhound or something - sorry ran out of examples, but go to AKCdot org and look up breeds and read about them...even if you are going to rescue or adopt.

Unless you have time to housebreak the dog, and give basic obedience training, it's not fair to get a young dog or puppy!

Rescue one from a local shelter or

"Breed Rescue".

Some have perfectly wonderful dogs abandoned when the owner got sick or family moved away.

Well... Anyone who is working fulltime.. I would say do NOT start with a puppy. You should rescue a dog.. BUT don't rescue a dog if you are gone all the time, 5 days a week 9 or 10 hours.. That is not enough time and attention for a dog. To have a dog to be with for a few hours at night before you head to bed.. Just isn't fair to the dog.

A mid size to small dog that is intelligent, does not bark, and is given to sleeping a lot. Full time jobs are tough on poochies. I got a husky, and she is a napper 24/7, but when that wild hair gets up her butt, I am thankful for the acre yard. Avoid huskies (and all long haired dogs) as they are a pain when it comes to suits and nice clothes. Consider a Basenji, or a Shiba inu. I love my shiba Amelie. Pics are on my 360 page.

Look for breeds that dont require high amounts of excercise. sporting dogs such as boxers are breeds you should stay away from.
