Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea or even death. A lot of people think their dogs are OK after eating chocolate because they aren't "acting sick". Chocolate actually stimulates dogs, however, so you really shouldn't expect to see a dog who has eaten it moping around...at least not right away.

regular chocolate is actually tolerated quite well by dogs.

my boxer.( about 70 pounds at the time ) ingested about 3 pounds of chocolate the day before easter,

we immediatly called the vet, and she stated that in order for the dog ot be really ill, she for her weight would have had to ingest at least 6 pounds if not more,

that was just a guideline however, sometimes dogs do have different effects...

Chocolate has a certain ingredient that doge have a bad reaction to. What happens is that it goes in their blood stream and can kill them instantly, luckily scientists have found a pill that can clean the poison out of the dogs body, i hope this helps!

Chocolate can be toxic to dogs. Milk chocolate, however, is the least dangerous type of chocolate for dogs. Large dogs have to eat quite a bit of milk chocolate for it to pose a problem. Unsweetened and semi-sweet chocolate are much more dangerous. It takes a very little amount of unsweetened (bakers) chocolate to kill a dog. If you catch your dog within an hour or two of eating the chocolate you can induce vomitting, at your vet's discretion. This is usually done with Hydrogen Peroxide (not the stuff for bleaching hair, the type that helps to disinfect a cut and wash your mouth).
