Parvo is a virus that attacks the dog's gastrointestinal system. It causes severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea, but it usually kills by dehydration. It can be found in lots of places that have been exposed to an animal with parvo, as the animal usually sheds the virus for a few days before they actually get ill. It can live on any porous service (like concrete, dirt, carpeting, etc.) for years, and can only be killed by letting the area soak in a strong disinfecting solution. If you have lost dogs from parvo, I would not be bringing any other dogs into the house for quite a while and defiantly not any puppies that have not had ALL of their vaccinations. The puppy shots do not provide full immunity until they have received the full series (at least 4) of shots.

Parvo can live in the soil for YEARS and on surfaces for nearly a year. If you keep bringing puppies into the environment without thoroughly disinfecting first, you are dooming them. Get an older adult dog which has been vaccinated and built up an immunity, if you must get a dog at all. Trust me it is a horrible death and it hurts THEM a LOT more than it does you.

Canine parvovirus is carried by dogs. Adult dogs may be infected carriers without showing any clinical signs. Dogs with the typical diarrhea that parvovirus causes shed the virus as well. It can last a long time in the environment, perhaps as long as 9 months or longer.
